The Aerosol Monitoring Station at IERSD`s premises in Penteli (38°03'N 23°52'E, 527 m asl, from 2008 to 2013) and Thissio (38°00'N 23°43.48'E, 110 m asl, from 2013 up to now), is organized and operates upon an integrated strategic plan aiming at high quality measurements, in order to reduce the uncertainty in the spatial and temporal distribution of aerosols at the urban background of Athens. The main goal of the station includes the study of aerosols physical characteristics, their optical properties and their chemical composition, in order to investigate their production and transport processes over the Eastern Mediterranean, their climatic role and their impacts on health and ecosystems. The simultaneous determination of aerosols chemical composition and their optical and physical properties, allows the identification of certain schemes for physical and optical characteristics based on the sources and origins of aerosols.
The following instruments are operated:
- Mobile integrated nephelometer (M903, Radiance Research) for the measurement of the scattering coefficient at 530 nm
- A Particle Soot Absorption Photometer (PSAP, Radiance Research) for the measurement of the absorption coefficient at three wavelengths (470, 522 και 660 nm)
- Automated filter samplers for PM10, PM2.5 and PM2.5-10 (PARTISOL FRM)
- An Ozone analyzer (THERMO Scientific).
